‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step’ says a famous proverb. Because one step is obviously followed by new ones. And Rondine’s trip to the Southern Caucasus, scheduled for next July, is tracing a course which seems will turn out to be much longer than a thousand miles. Yesterday’s news in fact included another one of these ‘steps’: the meeting with the Shiekh-ul-Islam, Allahshukur Pashazade. The Mufti of the Caucasian region, one of the maximum religious figures and Muslim leader of the whole area. Informed of the project he responded to the appeal with enthusiasm through a letter sent by the Azerbaijani ambassador, Emil Karimov, mediator for the occasion. Pashazade underlined that Rondine’s contribution to peace and inter-religious dialogue will give the results it deserves. The answer was followed by an omen or, better said, the invitation for Rondine’s delegation which will travel around the Caucasian area in July: “I would be glad to meet you”, he wrote in his letter. It will be an opportunity to meet a man who is profoundly committed to peace: on the 26th and 27th April, in fact, a world summit of religious leaders was held in Baku (one of the many cities which will be visited during the trip in July), more precisely in the ‘Gulistan’ palace. Representatives of different nations and religious traditions of 32 countries participated to the summit. It was on the 26th that a meeting promoted by the orthodox Patriarch Kirill, between the leader of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Catholicos Garegin II, and the prominent figure of the Muslim order Sheikh-ul-Islam, Allahshukur Pashazade, was held. This meeting, which lasted over an hour, saw the most charismatic personalities of the two confessions work side by side on the same table, overcoming even the mistrust of the most radical groups. The commitment to peace between Caucasian peoples was demonstrated one more time by Pashazade.
